No Levels For Old Men? NPCs in Imperial Khador

with 3 comments

Blame Palette.  It’s decent general advice for life, to be honest, but in this specific case something has been instigated for which she is responsible.  See, she’s currently hosting a series of articles on designing a town for Pathfinder/D&D.3.x, and the most recent of these has introduced me to this piece on the Alexandrian about what the D&D levels really correspond to.  And… I’d sort of been confused, in the past, about how the original endgame of D&D, where characters heading towards tenth level settle down and build a castle or tower and become essentially lords of the land, gave rise to a further ten levels beyond that, and what they were for, and how a society which had characters like that in it could function.

And now I think I understand…

Reservoir Gobs: Scarface Ofi

Dramatis Personae

  • Ofi (Gobber Gun Mage 1, played by Ben, and then by Hark)
  • Snarf + Piggy (Gobber Arcane Mechanic 1, played by Si, and then by Hark)
  • Nikkit (Gobber Rogue 1, played by Ben)
  • Rami (Bogrin Bodger 1, played by Hark, and then by Jess)
  • Fran (Bogrin Fighter 1, played by Si)

Having rested up for a day, the titular Goblins! retuned to Thorsten’s Yard to check up on their stash, found a steamboat moored up at the jetty, and tried to sneak in and see what was what.

“The crate emits an almost Zen sense of crateness.  If you come close to the crate, you may start questioning your life choices, and wonder if you wouldn’t be better off as a crate.”

Dramatarse Personie:

  • Ofi (Gobber Gun Mage 1, played by Jess)
  • Snarf (Gobber Arcane Mechanic 1, played by Dave)
  • Nikkit (Gobber Rogue 1, played by Ben)
  • Rami (Bogrin Bodger 1, played by Squirrel, then Hark)
  • Fran (Bogrin Fighter 1, played by Si)

After discovering that their civilian occupations were a bit held up by the complete lack of visitors to their part of Fisherbrook over the last few weeks (no-one to rob, no-one to show off your sharpshooting skills to, no-one to mend things for), the titular goblins decided to set off for town and see if the humans had actually decided to abandon the grotty decrepit hellhole after its brief but exciting spell as a warzone earlier in the year.

The Passion Of The Games Master

with one comment

The Star Wars game has turned and turned again, settling on a point where the player characters have had a job go off smoothly (K was shocked, to the point where he almost shut down in sheer terror, the laws of reality having obviously been compromised in some fashion) and can potter around for a few months doing strictly legal work while they wait for the Imperial heat to die down a bit.

That means I’m up for the GMmin’ seat next, so the Goblins! are lined up to explore the industrial hellhole that five years of war have made of their city.  It also means, alas, that my usual excuse of “it’s not my game, I just provide the house” no longer applies, and I have to herd the various cats together in order to actually get a session going with people in the same room as me.

Initiative and Reaction Times

with 3 comments

Been thinking about that crazy lil’ thing called Initiative recently, in the context of this and that, and also of the problem of timing in the round.  A player is called upon to take their turn.  They sit there, jaws agape, emitting a noise like a vacuum cleaner in distress.  How long do you let them hang there before making their decision?  Likewise, sometimes players confer over the best tactical approach to their turn.  How long do you permit this to continue?  I’ve been in a Deadlands game where the opening round of a fight ran to twenty minutes as our resident Napoleon Nerdaparte insisted on having all factors enumerated and codified so he could devise the ultimate plan.
